Multi-part plaster mould
2 day workshop with John Rainey
Service Description
This two-day workshop offers a practical introduction to the design and construction of multi-part plaster moulds for slip casting. Aimed at ceramicists, sculptors, and designers who want to reproduce more complex forms—including those with undercuts or intricate details—this course focuses on the skills needed to plan, build, and troubleshoot moulds with three or more parts. Participants will learn how to analyse forms, determine parting lines, construct parting walls, and pour multi-section moulds with precision. Key topics include mould alignment, registration keys, effective release strategies, and techniques for creating durable, functional moulds. Through a combination of demonstrations and hands-on making, each participant will complete their own multi-part mould by the end of the course. While the moulds made during the workshop will require drying time before use, participants will have the opportunity to practise slip casting using pre-made sample moulds. This allows for hands-on experience with the casting process and a better understanding of how multi-part moulds function in practice. Some previous experience with basic plaster mould making and slip casting is recommended, but completion of a specific course is not required. All materials are provided, and participants can work with a model they bring (pending suitability) or select from a range of provided forms. John Rainey is a Belfast-based sculptor working primarily in ceramics, with a specialist interest in mould making and casting processes. He is an Associate Academician of the Royal Ulster Academy and holds an MA in Ceramics & Glass from the Royal College of Art, London. In 2023, he was awarded the Rosemary James Memorial Trust Bursary, which supports Northern Irish artists engaging innovatively with materials. https://www.instagram.com/john_rainey_/
