Service Description
Glaze Masterclass 8th & 15th March 2025 9.30am – 4.00pm This workshop is designed to equip students with the tools to start their own glaze research and development. It is ideal for beginners who want to understand what glaze is, the role played by raw materials within glazes, how to alter glaze recipes, apply glaze and how the finished ceramic surface is influenced by the firing process. It will be delivered across two days: Day 1 (Saturday 8th March) • Health and Safety and keeping accurate records. • Making Test Tiles • Glaze recipes. - Understanding glaze recipes and what is meant by a ‘base glaze’. - The 3 main components of a glaze and the function of key raw materials and oxides within it. - Test batches and scaling up successful recipes. - Mixing a glaze: step-by-step process of how to mix glazes (weighing, sieving, storing, and settling time). Day 2 (Saturday 15th March) Glaze application (dipping, pouring, brushing and spraying). Linear line blends. Pyrometric cones & how the firing schedule and process can impact results. About the artist: Helen Noble is a ceramic artist and part-time lecturer in Ceramics at Belfast Metropolitan College. Having completed her MA in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art, London in 2011, she has a particular interest in and experience of working with glaze and colour. Considering and exploring these elements early in the making process can make a significant difference to the quality and overall success of a body of work.
