Throwing Masterclass : Plates
With Kat Pino
Service Description
It's no secret that plates (or any flatware) are one of the most difficult shapes to make on the potter's wheel. Flattening out a large amount of clay requires different throwing techniques and impeccable body awareness. In this masterclass, you'll learn everything about plates. It covers what makes a good plate, plate design, what restaurants look for in plates, and the biggest pitfalls and challenges in making plates (and how to overcome them). You'll get to learn about the infamous S-crack, compression, the importance of slow-drying, and using the centrifugal force of the wheel to your advantage. Kat will demonstrate the throwing of a contemporary-style plate and share some advanced techniques and tips. After that, it's your turn to take a seat behind the wheel. The Masterclass ends with a 30-minute trimming demo and room for Q&A. Skill Prerequisite This Masterclass is for Intermediate and Advanced students and is not suitable for beginners. Participants are expected to be able to center 4lbs (2kg) of clay and throw consistent cylinders. Glazing & Firing Your work will be biscuit fired with the option to return to one of our Pay As You Go Sessions (£12) to glaze your pieces. About the Instructor Kat Pino is a Dutch ceramicist and production potter with over 10 years of experience.
