Build bigger with coils

Hand-building larger pots with coils

Starts 21 Aug
100 British pounds
Beersbridge Road

Available spots

Service Description

In this one-day workshop, students will learn how to use the coil building technique to create larger, hand-built pottery forms. Perfect for beginners and those looking to expand their ceramic skills, the session focuses on building strong, balanced structures using coils of clay. Participants will explore how to prepare and join coils properly, manage wall thickness, and shape and refine their forms as they grow in height and complexity. Demonstrations will cover essential techniques such as scoring and slipping, using supports, and smoothing surfaces for a clean finish. Throughout the day, students will be guided through creating their own larger-scale vessel or sculptural form, with individual support and feedback provided. The workshop also includes tips on design, proportion, and structural integrity to ensure long-lasting results. By the end of the session, students will leave with a completed piece ready for drying and fired to the bisque stage. Taught by artist Jodi Coyne www.jodicoyne.com
